Western Heritage Home (WHH)

WHH is Ghana Together’s primary partner in Ghana.  We have worked with WHH for more than two years, and have developed not only a relationship based on trust and shared values, but a mutual solid “business” culture with strong accountability, frequent communication, and open sharing of information.  Ghana Together receives regular financial reports from WHH, and feedback via regular phone calls.

WHH was founded in 2006 by James Kainyiah, native of Axim, Economic Development Chief of Axim, and Owner and Managing Director of Jamkay Ltd. in Sekondi.  WHH is a broad-based non-governmental organization (NGO) established to improve the social and economic life in the Axim community.  It is registered by the Ghanaian government, and is based in Axim.  WHH led by Aximites who already are leaders in the major sectors—democratic, traditional, educational, religious, and business.   Ghana Together’s President and Vice President serve as advisory members of the WHH Board. Currently, WHH owns and operates the Children’s Home/Community Learning Center in Axim with Ghana Together’s financial support.

The mission of WHH is:

  • To provide a children’s home and outreach program to a good number of orphaned and other vulnerable children regardless of faith, race or origins;
  • To provide the children with at least basic and junior secondary education;
  • To foster sustainable economic development;
  • To provide leadership training to adults in the Axim community;

Friends

Alhaji Nuhu Memorial Health Care Centre in Kamgbunli Village - This new, much-needed health center is located in a small Muslim village in the Nzema District near Axim. Mr. Ali Nuhu Abeka, son of the founder of Kamgbunli, has established the small clinic there. We share similar values, and we applaud Ali’s work in the same general geographic area as our own activities. We were hosted by the village in 2006, and Maryanne visited again in April 2008 to take photos and talk with the leaders on behalf of Ali.

DaasGift Quality Foundation - DQF’s leader, Gifty Asmah, was one of the original delegates on our first visit to Axim. We admire Gifty’s work, and have learned much from her about women’s entrepreneurial activities in Ghana.

Engineers Without Border-NW Washington Professionals - Located in Bellingham, WA, EWB NWW is a Professional Chapter of EWB-USA, a non-profit humanitarian organization established to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life. This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally responsible engineers and engineering students. EWB NWW is active in Axim, with the logistical and communications assistance of Ghana Together.

Global Citizen Journey - GCJ was our sponsor on our first journey to Ghana. It continues to sponsor journeys to other parts of the world

Jamkay Enterprise Ltd. - James Kainyiah, Chair of the Board of our partner organization Western Heritage Home, is owner and managing director of Jamkay Ltd, a business located in Sekondi, Ghana. James is the driving force behind the Children’s Home, Community Learning Center, and other WHH initiatives in Axim.

Konongo-Odumase Secondary School - KOSS, located near Kumasi, has no website, but we have affection for the school because one of our Board members, Barbara, served as a CUSO volunteer there years ago, and recently helped stock their new library.
